School Times

School begins at 8:45am and finishes at 2:45am with recess break from 10:45 to 11:15, and lunch break from 12:40 to 1:30pm.

Attendance and Absences

Parents or caregivers of children from Kindergarten through to Year 12 are responsible for ensuring their child attends school every day.

If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, please either tell your child's teacher or the administrative assistant at the school and explain the reason by phone or written note as soon as possible, or within 7 days.

Once children are enrolled parents are legally required to send them to school every day that the school is open for instruction or participation in school activities, such as sports days. A small number of absences may be justified if your child:

  • has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays).
  • has to go to special religious ceremony
  • is required to attend a serious and/or urgent family situation (such as a funeral)
  • is too sick to go to school, or has an infectious illness.

Failure to explain an absence within this time will be recorded as an unjustified absence on a student's record. Schools will inform parents if a student is absent from school without explanation.

What should I do if our family is going on holiday in school time?

Families should try to arrange holidays during school vacations. If they can only be arranged during school time, you should contact the school principal in advance to discuss the matter and complete the necessary paperwork.

Excursions

Cairnsfoot School conducts excursions to enhance and consolidate classroom learning. Excursions provide students with meaningful experiences designed to assist with generalising skills and exploring concepts.  Full details of excursions will be provided to parents/carers and signed permission is required for all excursions. A full risk assessment is conducted for all excursions and school executive review procedures and safety prior to excursion. Full details of any excursions are available by contacting the school.

Newsletters

A school newsletter is sent home with each student once a term. Our newsletter contains a principals report and class contributions. The newsletter is also available online and can be downloaded from the quick link tab at the top righthand of this page. Previous copies of the newsletter can also be downloaded from there.

School transport

Students who are unable to travel independently may be conveyed to and from school by contract buses/taxi arranged by the Department of Education and Training. Parents have to apply for transport and indicate why transport is required. Any changes to transport arrangements require departmental approval and time for such approval to be granted.

Communication book

Each student has a Communication Sheet which is taken home in the student's bag every school day. The Communication Sheet provides an opportunity for teachers and parents to inform each other about concerns or issues throughout the day.

Religion & ethics

NSW Schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics.

There are no approved providers of these programs who are available and can cater to the needs of students at Cairnsfoot School. Therefore special religious education and special education in ethics do not run at Cairnsfoot School.
