The kitchen is used for cooking programs aimed at developing and generalising living skills that will allow our students to become independent individuals in the future.
These programs provide meaningful, relevant and enjoyable opportunities to practice and generalise many skills and concepts across the Key Learning Areas (KLA) and across a variety of environments.
Some of these include:
- functional mathematics skills - money (buying ingredients, ordering food), measurement (measuring ingredients), number (counting our amounts), time (cooking times).
- functional literacy skills - reading labels, finding ingredients in shops, following recipes.
- living skills - setting the table, preparing the food, cleaning up, hygiene, safety in the kitchen, safety in the community.
- communicating with members of wider community - shopping, ordering food in restaurants.
- Social etiquette when out with family and friends
- technology - using appliances, using computer to find recipes
- Exploring foods from other cultures.
